This lesson is not too hard. Again, more memorization. We are introduced to many word endings and how to deal with homonyms or words that sound alike but have different meanings. And, as always, more arbitraries.
Soundalike rule #1 - If one of the two words is spelled with a long A vowel. write the word utilizing the long A and an AE with the other.
EX= Mail = MAIL Male= MAEL
Soundalike rule #2 - If neither word is actually spelled with a long A, but has a long A sound, write the one spelled with a EA as AE and the other with a long A.
Bear= BAER Bare=BAIR
Soundalike rule #3 - If a word has a long E vowel sound and is spelled "EE," write that word with a long E, and write the EA word with a AE.
EX= Week= WEAOEK Weak=WAEK
Meet= MAOET Meat= MAET
Deer= DAOER Dear= DAER
Soundalike rule #4 - If there are more than two words that sound the same, incorporate the asterisk with the word used least often.
EX= Pair= PAIR Pear= PAER Pare= PA*ER
Vein= VAEN Vain=VAIN Vane= VA*EN
ARY= Consonant + AIR
Ex= Primary = PRAOEU/ MAIR Monetary= MON/TAIR
ORY= Consonant + OIR
Ex= Category= KAT/GOIR Mandatory = MAND/TOIR
MP sound= FRP
Ex= Ramp=RAFRP Stamp=STAFRP Lamp= LAFRP
Ending in MENT= -MT
EX= Basement= BAIS/-MT Cement= SAOE/-MT
Ending in TH= -GT or TH* (I chose -GT)
Fourth=FOURGT Bath= BAGT
Ending in LESS= -LS
Endless= END/-LS Careless= KAIR/-LS Harmless= HARM/-LS
Ending in NESS= -NS
Sickness= SIK/-NS Darkness= DARK/-NS
Ending SOME= SOEM
Ending St= *S
Rest= R*ES Fast= FA*S Just= J*US
Ending Er = ER
Longer= LONG/ER Taller= TAU/LER
Ending Al= Consonant + AL
Dental= DEN/TAL Typical= TIP/KAL Normal=NOR/MAL
Ending SIS or SES = SIS or SAOEZ
Crisis= KRAOEU/SIS Crises= KRAOEU/SAOEZ
Basis= BAI/SIS BASES= BAI/SAOEZ
Ending ERER= RER
Caterer= KAIT/RER Murderer= MURD/RER
Ending IER and IOR= YER
Easier= AOEZ/YER Easiest= AOEZ/Y*ES Nicest= NAOEUS/*ES
I called my sister about this one. I had to think about Y*ES and *ES. The Y makes the E sound. Craziest. Compared to Quickest. Makes Sense?
Ending Logical or Logically= L-L and L-L/LI
Psychological= SAOEUK/L-L Chronologically= KRON/L-L/LI
Ending RCH sound= FRPB
Arch=AFRPB Porch= POFRPB
Ending NK= *NG
Prank= PRA*NG Sank= SA*NK Sink= S*INK
Ending NCH sound= FRPBLG
Inch= IFRPBLG Branch= BRAFRPBLG
Word beginnings ER
Few words are spelled with a ER. ERRAND, ERROR, etc. We spell those with beginning *ER. *ER/RAND and *ER/ROR
Now some ER words are pronounced with the E sound. Eraser, Erect. You spell the with the long E. AOE/RAIS/ER AOE/REKT
Next is arbitraries. About 15 news ones are introduced. I won't list them all.
CERTAIN=SERN Certainly= SERNL Different=DIFRNT
As you can see, there is a lot to memorize here. Not hard, just time consuming. I will post update as needed. Thanks.
Update 7/28/14- I haven't forgotten about the blog, I promise. I have been on vacation and I didn't bring my machine. As much as practicing while looking at the ocean sounded appealing, I actually read magazines and played with my boys on the beach. I got back on my machine this morning. I reviewed lesson nine and ten, just to get my fingers warmed up. Before I left, I made good headway on Lesson 11. I will be back to my routine until the next trip. I have a two more weekend trips planned and then Disneyland in October. I will post more as I approach the end of 11. I hope everyone is having a good summer so far!!!
I am now on the sentences part of the audio drill. I should be finished soon. I have a couple questions for Support, but so far so good!!!
Finally done with 11! This wasn't the hardest lesson, however, it has taken me the longest. I need to re-focus. With summer, and being busy with the family. School has not been on the top of my priority list. It is a difficult balance sometimes. On to 12!!!
